The Origin of Australian Artillery in 1871
The story of Australian Artillery began on 1 August 1871 with the formation of 'A' Battery, New South Wales Artillery. Serving through changing eras and multiple designations, this historic unit laid the foundation for the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery (RRAA). Early commanders such as Henry Green helped establish the discipline, resilience, and operational excellence that still characterise the Battery today.
Distinctive Traditions and Unique Honours
'A' Battery carries customs found nowhere else in the Australian Defence Force. While standard Artillery units wear their lanyard on the right shoulder, Gunners of 'A' Battery proudly wear the distinctive white lanyard on their left shoulder. Furthermore, while the guns themselves serve as the Colours for artillery regiments, 'A' Battery is the only unit entitled to carry the King's and Queen's Colours in traditional banner form.
